Looking for something festive to do in your homeschool this Christmas? Imagine curling up with a chapter book, then getting together with other young readers to talk about the story and build something inspired by it.

I’m inviting children in Grades 2–4 to join me for a live online novel study of Christmas in Camelot by Mary Pope Osborne. Over six weeks, we’ll follow Jack and Annie on their adventure, dig into the words they encounter, and try three hands-on STEM challenges together.
What we’ll do in our novel study
Talk about the story. What would you do if you were in Jack or Annie’s shoes? What clues make you think you know what might happen next? We’ll make predictions, talk about the characters’ choices, and look back at the book to explain our thinking.
Take words apart. We’ll explore base words, prefixes, and suffixes in a way children can use in their own reading. For example, if they know pack, they can use what they know about un- to figure out unpack. Looking at these meaningful word parts is called morphology.

Draw, write, and build. Children will share their ideas through discussion, drawing, and short writing activities. Across the six weeks, we’ll also tackle three STEM challenges inspired by the story, with time to design, build, and see what happens when we test our ideas.

Does my child need to read the book independently?
Your child can read the assigned chapters independently or enjoy them as a read-aloud with you. Either way, they’ll come to class ready to talk about the adventure. You’ll need a copy of Christmas in Camelot by Mary Pope Osborne. A library copy is welcome.
I’m Costa, an Ontario Certified Teacher with more than 25 years of teaching experience. I’ve also homeschooled my own children, and I know how nice it can be to have someone else lead a lesson while your child gets to learn alongside other kids.
